We run our kitesurfing lessons daily from 1st April – End of November. Kitesurfing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK and you can learn to kitesurf with the most experienced kitesurfing team in the country. Our kitesurfing lessons cater for all levels from the complete beginner to advanced tricks and even kitesurfing slider clinics. Also this website hosts an on-line forum with more info from local kitesurfers who have taken lessons with Surface2Air.
Here at Surface2Air, all of our kitesurfing instructors are fully insured BKSA senior and IKO level 2 certified with lots of teaching experience, which means you will be getting the safest and very best kitesurfing coaching. The International Kiteboarding Organisation (IKO) is the international governing body and the British Kite Sports Association (BKSA) is the UK governing body. In order to meet their requirements, all of our kitesurfing instructors have to be properly trained with appropriate water skills as well as first aid and many other relevant qualifications.
After each kitesurfing lesson you will be issued an IKO card, which denotes the kitesurfing level you have achieved. These cards are becoming ever more important as the sport of kitesurfing grows and many worldwide destinations require you to have one of these cards before you are permitted to kitesurf at the beach.
Kitesurfing lessons make a great weekend activity but we do run courses at S2AS Brighton every day of the week.
Day 1 Kitesurfing/Powerkite Lesson (3 Hours, land based)
The day 1 kitesurfing/powerkite lesson is essentially the start of a kitesurfing journey; this session will teach you all of the basics and prepare you for your kitesurfing adventures.
Get your first taste of real kite flying, and get answers to the millions of questions that you have! After a short briefing, you start with the kite in your hands and hone your flying skills, before moving on to mastering how to launch and land a kitesurf kite. Most importantly we teach you how to stay safe out there. After this 3 hour kite surfing lesson you will be itching for your next session and the chance to get out on the water!
Day 2 Kitesurfing Lesson (4 Hours)
This lesson continues directly on from the basic kite skills learnt on day 1, so we head straight to the beach and get suited and ready to go. Day 3 covers the following areas:
- Site assessment and safety briefing
- Recap of skills from day 1
- Kit set up, pre-flight checks and launching/landing of four line LEI kitesurfing kites
- Kite piloting and honing of flying skills
- Water re-launching
- Body dragging
- Upwind body dragging
- Safety release and emergency pack-down
Day 3 Kitesurfing Lesson (4 Hours)
This lesson continues directly on from the skills learnt on day 2 and is primarily aimed at getting you up and riding on the board and to a level where you feel like you can practice independently and safely after the course. Be prepared for a full on day of fun! Areas covered include:
- Assessment of site, wind/weather and sea conditions
- Kit set up, pre-flight checks and launching/landing of four line LEI kitesurfing kites
- Kite tuning
- Continued practice of bodydragging and retrieval of board
- Introduction of twin tip kitesurfing boards
- Demonstration and practice of getting into position with board for waterstarts
- Theory and practice of waterstarts with kiteboard
- Learning to ride board in both directions and how to stop (progression dependent on ability of individual)
- Introduction to suitable equipment for continuing your kitesurfing journey
Our Brighton based instructors use HEADZONE waterproof radio helmets to communicate directly with their students on the water to achieve better results faster and safer.
We provide you with all the equipment that you need for your lessons: wetsuit, harness, buoyancy aid, helmet, boards and kites. All you need to bring is some food, sun cream, a towel (or suitable clothing for day 1) and loads of energy and enthusiasm!

Here at S2AS Brighton we run our day 1 (land based) lessons from a large safe grassy field based just along the coast at Telscombe. Our day 2 & 3 water based kitesurfing lessons are run at Shoreham Beach, which is one of the safest beaches in the area. Conditions are similar to neighbouring Lancing, but with far fewer riders on the water. Both Telscombe and Shoreham Beach offer excellent conditions and are located only a short trip from the shop in Hove, allowing you to meet the guys in the shop for a short briefing of the day ahead. The locations enable our BKSA/IKO qualified instructors to teach in an ideal environment to help you progress and enjoy the sport to the fullest.
