Hi peeps, another new person here.
I'm just getting up on the board (WOO-HOO!) in a controlled manner and right now can't get enough of it.
My regular haunt is Camber, but now the days are so short it's a pain to miss good winds as of course I can only attempt to go out 3 hours either side of low tide.
Are there any other places locally that work well in a S/SW/W at high tide? I think there's Minnis but that's only if there's an N in the wind? What a bummer we can't use Pegwell
And does anyone know anything about Kingsdown (Walmer) or St Margarets (Dover).
Cheers all. _________________ Andrew

Hi Andy..Welcome to the forum...
I Think James has been out at St Margarets.. Not the safest of places to go... I've seen a few people off Deal but have no idea if its any good for beginners.
Hate to put you off trying other locations at high tide but really the only one rideable around here is Hythe. I wouldn't recommend you giving it a shot at the level you are at the moment.
Best spot for high tide close to you will be Greatstone.
Have a look at the thread crap memory for wind direction for the required knowledge.
Did I meet you at Camber today? _________________ Filthy flies Slingshot and Naish......Rides Airush.

GK Sonic, Blue Renault Trafic. Yup, if you were there, that was me picking your brains!
Hoping to get out tomorrow (Tues) and Weds, too. Will take your advice and give Hythe a miss for now. What a bummer there's nowhere else that works at high tide on a SW. I'm generally too much of a girls blouse to go out in the winter in anything N or E! _________________ Andrew

I wouldn't recommend either kingsdown or St Mags, i've tried them both. The main problem is the big cliffes either side, these distort the wind direction and strength as it wraps around them. Its pretty nasty. Both are very rocky at low tide and really no good at that point. St maragrets has no good launching area as its got alot of groynes close. There is a grass area you could launch but you have to navigate car park and railings whilst flying the kite pretyy sketchy to say the least. As i found out when i tried. Kingsdown is the better option although it can seem like a good direction on the beach but be slightly off when you get out. I've know more people rescued there than anywhere else. Neither are great unfortunately. Deal is good large launching area, but it is deep water and has v steep beach so does get some monstrous shore dump, been battered there a few times. _________________ I wanna be first one out and last one in. Thanks for that James. My folks are at Walmer, and with Christmas looming I wanted to get the low-down now for quick escapes! Unless it's a perfect SE I think I'll give Kingsdown (and def St Mags) a miss.
My mum sees kitesurfers from the golf course at Kingsdown, and comments, 'Oh yes, but THEY'RE really good!'. Cheeky mare, she's never even seen me out. Not that she's wrong... _________________ Andrew

If it's remotely easterly then head to Greatstone. You can sail there in all but the highest states of tide. However, it's a long walk if the tide is out.
(Mind you.. it's a even longer walk if you've just dislocated your toe!) |
