Do you need your own equipment?

Yes and no, having your own boots can be endlessly better than renting as without proper fitting boots, can cause a lot of injuries when riding. Whereas a rental board and binding may be okay, but won't be consistent each time so will be harder to progress. Also you will be able to get better quality equipment. 

What are the essentials?

The essentials you need are your boots, helmets and goggles as these will keep you comfortable and safe on the slopes.

How Do I Maintain My Snowboard?

You will need to wax your board every 4 or 5 days riding depending on the conditions. And then a full service every couple of weeks of riding including sharpening the rails. Also to prevent rust you will need to dry your snowboard and store it in a dry place.
